The early few minutes saw both teams adopt a slow build up play just to get themselves comfortable in the game.
The teams took on different defensive approaches as Wits opted for getting men behind the ball whereas Pirates chose to play a high press, as they tried to win the ball high up the pitch.
Pirates started to create good chances after some great interplay but their finishing narrowly missed their targets.
The first half ended with the game being tightly contested but much of the better chances fell to the team from Soweto.
The second half started off with Pirates in the ascendency and it paid off as they broke the deadlock through a great finish to give them the lead.
Bidvest Wits pushed hard to get into the game but a double block from Pirates insured that Wits could not find their equalizer.
Moments later Wits was denied again as the headed effort was clawed out from the top corner by the Pirates.
Bidvest picked up the tempo in the second half as Pirates became content with just sitting back and creating off the counter.
Pirates conceded a last minute penalty which was given after the Pirates' defender sought to keep out a shot. The keeper walked up to take it and the shot was saved as the keeper guessed the right way to keep Bidevest at bay.
