The first game of the Metropoiltan U19 Premier Cup kicked off with Vasco da Gama up against Cape Town All Stars. The All Stars defence was the busier of the two as Vasco’s Byron Thomas was provided some quality passes from Brandon Leiching. All Stars Number one Taariq Barendse looked comfortable under the constant pressure from Vasco’s offence with Sunday Chindo marshalling the defence. Vasco carved out a sublime opportunity to take the lead but Luke Grieves failed to capitalise putting the ball over the cross bar. Abdulaleem Jacobs received the game’s first yellow card which seemed to spark Vasco to life, which two quick fire chances, one of which hit the cross bar, thanks to the heroics of Taariq Barendse.
Vasco suffered a blow when Cheslin Michaels received his marching orders early on in the second half after the professional foul he committed on an All Star attacker, twenty metres outside of the box. The free kick resulted in a goal by Zaahid vd Schyff for the All Stars. Vasco with ten men did not sit back and pressed All Stars into their final third. Vasco’s resilience finally paid off when Tristan Adams header found the back of the net from a corner.
Cape Town All Stars seemed to tire heading up to the final whistle, rarely putting pressure on Vasco’s depleted defence. Final score 1-1 and two points apiece.
